Caleb Williams’ MVP chances just skyrocketed amid huge Bears news

Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears were actually one of the bigger surprises in the NFL last season, winning 11 games and capturing the NFC North division title thanks much in part to the tremendous progression quarterback Caleb Williams showed during the second half of the year.

The Bears even defeated the hated rival Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs, marking their first postseason victory since January 2011.

But with great success also comes great responsibility, and sometimes, that responsibility comes in the form of a punishment … sort of.

The NFL has revealed every team’s opponents for the 2026 campaign, and Chicago ended up having the most difficult strength of schedule, with its opponents boasting a combined winning percentage of .550 last season. The Packers were tied for third at .538, the Minnesota Vikings (.519) were 11th, and the Detroit Lions were near the bottom at .467.

It’s a good news-bad news situation for Williams and the Bears, who actually faced a more difficult SOS (.571) going into last year.

The good news? Chicago has a chance to really prove itself as a Super Bowl contender early on in 2026, and with that, Williams will have an opportunity to establish himself as a genuine MVP contender right off the bat.

Right now, Williams is viewed as a fringe possibility for the award, with the usual names like Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes and now Drake Maye generally topping the list. But Williams definitely has a window, especially against such a difficult slate of teams.

Last season, the former No. 1 overall pick threw for 3,942 yards, 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 58.1 percent of his passes and posting a 90.1 passer rating, displaying an uncanny ability to get it done in the clutch. Just ask Packers fans about that.

Still, it’s clear that Williams has some work to do. His throwing accuracy leaves a whole lot to be desired, and the Bears did subtract a couple of key weapons in D.J. Moore and Olamide Zacchaeus this offseason. But it’s evident that the elite talent is there.

If Chicago is able to put together another double-digit win campaign and win a second straight division title on the right shoulder of Williams, look for MVP voters to strongly consider the USC product when it comes time to cast their ballots.
