Chicago Cubs once again tied to ‘an arm they have liked for years’ on trade market
The Chicago Cubs are off to a hot start, having one of the best records in all of baseball here in early May. Chicago is getting it done with impressive pitching, despite losing Cade Horton for the season, Matthew Boyd for extended time and not having Justin Steele.
The injuries to the rotation have hurt and it’s expected that the Cubs will make a move.
They have been connected to a few pitchers already. But one arm they reportedly could pursue is someone they have liked for years. Now, in 2026 the time could be right to strike and land another top-end starter for a playoff push.
Chicago Cubs linked to Robbie Ray again
On Monday, The Athletic writers Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma looked at 10 starters the Cubs could look at to acquire. Among them was Robbie Ray and Logan Webb of San Francisco. Now, the Giants may not be ready to sell just yet but if they do, the duo suggests the Cubs should contact them.
The typically reliable Webb just landed on the injured list with bursitis in his right knee, and he has a 5.06 ERA. Assuming the knee issue isn’t significant, that shouldn’t scare off the Cubs, whose excellent defense would support Webb and his 58.5 percent ground-ball rate.
Webb is an innings-eater, and he won’t hit the free-agent market until after the 2028 season. The price to acquire him would be enormous, but he is a legitimate ace.
Ray is an arm the Cubs have liked for years. His injury history is much spottier than Webb’s, but the results are certainly there this season (2.76 ERA, 1.095 WHIP), and he’s an impending free agent. He makes a lot of sense for the Giants to move.
Ray would be a cheaper option for the Cubs. He’s set to be a free agent so it’s unlikely Chicago would have to part ways with a big prospect. They don’t want to have to give up a top prospect unless they are going after a star arm.
Getting a starting pitcher will likely be on top of Chicago’s list as the deadline approaches. But we could see the Cubs make a mover earlier. And if they do, don’t be surprised if it’s with the Giants.
