Chicago Sky react to Gabriela Jaquez’s move away from basketball

Chicago Sky guard Gabriela Jaquez (11)

Gabriela Jaquez is all set for her rookie season with the Chicago Sky. She entered the league with a lot of hype surrounding her following a successful collegiate campaign with the UCLA Bruins. The 22-year-old played a key role in the program’s national championship run.

The Sky selected her at No. 5 to bolster their guard rotation. Jaquez participated in the team’s WNBA preseason slate, coming off the bench in both matchups. She scored 12 points and grabbed three rebounds against the Phoenix Mercury on April 25. Jaquez added four points and four rebounds versus the Atlanta Dream on Wednesday. The team finished 0-2 in the tune-up games.

While her production may not be mind-blowing, head coach Tyler Marsh will likely give her ample playing time. Jaquez can play at both guard spots and showcased her efficiency from the field in college.

Chicago Sky’s Gabriel Jaquez throws first pitch in Cubs game

Jaquez visited Wrigley Field on Tuesday. She threw the first pitch ahead of the matchup between the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds. The Sky posted two photos and one clip of the guard from her visit to the venue. They added their reaction in the caption.

“’this is far’ 😭 @gabrielajaquezz threw out the first pitch in today’s @cubs game!” the Sky wrote.

The Cubs are hosting the Reds for a four-game series that started on Monday. The home team won the opener 5-4.

Meanwhile, Jaquez and the Sky will begin their regular season on Saturday against the Portland Fire. The team aims to bounce back from a disappointing 2025 campaign, winning only 10 of its 44 games.

Chicago made several offseason moves, including trading Angel Reese to the Dream on April 6. The franchise revamped its roster by bringing in several veterans like Skylar Diggins, Rickea Jackson and Dijonai Carrington. They are expected to help end the Sky’s two-year postseason drought.
