Craig Counsell puts pitching staff on notice as skid continues
The Chicago Cubs are officially in a skid. After losing a series to the Chicago White Sox last weekend, the Cubs have now lost eight-straight games and were swept for the second-straight series this weekend.
Following a sweep to the Milwaukee Brewers, the Cubs dropped three more to the Houston Astros.
Now, they find themselves reeling and sit at 29-24 overall and in third place in the NL Central. Nothing is going right for Chicago as they are struggling to score runs as well as struggling to pitch. Following Sunday’s loss to Houston, manager Craig Counsell sent a message to the pitching staff.

When meeting the media on Sunday after the game, Craig Counsell didn’t hold back on the pitching struggles overall for this team.
“Look, on the pitching side, we’ve gotta prevent homers better. If you give up the number of homers you’re giving up it’s a problem,” Counsell said. “When the disparity is that much, it’s not wind blowing out and it’s kind of an offensive juggernaut type day. That hasn’t been the case. Tough to win games when we are giving up the number of homers we are giving up.”
The Cubs have allowed a total of 67 home runs this season, second most in the league behind the Washington Nationals. On Sunday, they allowed three home runs to the Astros, helping them get the 8-5 win. All three came off of Shota Imanaga with the big one in the fifth-inning when Christian Walker hit a three-run shot.
That home run was a part of a five-run inning that gave the Astros the lead and eventually the win. Home runs have been a big problem for Imanaga, dating back to last season. Imanaga has given up seven this season already. It’s carried over this year, and now Counsell isn’t shying away from talking about it more.
Let’s see if the Cubs staff can now get the message and execute it as they head to Pittsburgh for an NL Central matchup.
