Cubs’ Moises Ballesteros in line to win a major award in MLB
The Chicago Cubs have a few players on the roster who could be walking away with some fine hardware. Second baseman Nico Hoerner is a possible MVP candidate, while Moises Ballesteros could win Rookie of the Year.
Ballesteros is one of the Cubs’ best hitters and was ranked as one of the favorites to win the award.

According to MLB.com’s Jason Foster, who polled MLB experts, Ballesteros ranked fifth to win the National League Rookie of the Year Award. Infielders Konnor Griffin, Sal Stewart, JJ Wetherholt, and right-hander Nolan McLean finished ahead of Ballesteros in the voting.

“Like others on this list, Ballesteros made noise in his initial callup last season, posting an .868 OPS in 20 games for the Cubs,” wrote Foster. “And like the others, he’s back at it this season. The lefty swinger leads all qualified NL rookies with a .500 slugging percentage and an .827 OPS, while his six homers rank third among the group.”
Overall, through 36 games, Ballesteros is batting .265 with an .827 OPS and six home runs. The last Cubs rookie to win the Rookie of the Year Award was third baseman Kris Bryant in 2015. In 151 games that season, Bryant batted .275 with a .858 OPS and mashed 26 home runs.
McLean is the odds on favorite to win the award, as he is 1-2 with a 2.78 ERA and has struck out 57 in his first eight starts. Barring injury to McLean, and unless Ballesteros can go on a massive hot streak, a top five finish wouldn’t be to bad for the 22-year-old.
