Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark loses confidence of WNBA GMs

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark

The WNBA released its yearly general manager survey on Tuesday ahead of the 2026 season opener on Friday. The results revealed a sharp decline in executive confidence regarding Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark.

The league surveys all WNBA general managers every year to gauge present and future expectations. Executives answer dozens of questions but cannot vote for their own teams or personnel.

Last year, half of the general managers selected Clark as the player they would choose to build a new franchise around. This year, only 20% of executives chose the 24-year-old Fever guard. Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers claimed the top spot in this critical category with 33%.

Bueckers won the 2025 WNBA Rookie of the Year award after a stellar debut season. She averaged 19.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. She also set the league’s single-game rookie scoring record with 44 points.

Clark also experienced significant drops in the new survey’s positional rankings. She previously tied Las Vegas Aces star Chelsea Gray as the league’s best point guard. Both players earned 50% of the vote heading into the 2025 season

Gray now commands a dominant 73% share of the point guard votes. Clark’s support in this specific category dwindled to just 20% this year. Bueckers trailed them in third place, securing 7% of the vote.

Furthermore, executives stripped Clark of her title as the WNBA’s best shooting guard. She led that category with 33% last year but received zero votes this year. Las Vegas Aces guard Jackie Young seized the top spot with 27% of the votes. Bueckers finished closely behind Young with 20% of the shooting guard votes.

The dip in confidence comes after Clark was limited to just 13 games last season due to multiple lower-body injuries. It’s hard to deny that her absence has impacted how general managers assess her long-term reliability and immediate impact.

The survey does not predict outcomes but reflects how top executives currently view players across the league. It also offered a glimpse into how they think this season will play out.

Clark remains one of the league’s most talented players despite the decline in votes. She enters the 2026 campaign fully healthy and ready to compete. The All-Star guard is expected to return to peak form and rebuild confidence among WNBA executives this season.
