Chicago Cubs [somehow] maintain top-10 MLB power ranking, Pete Crow-Armstrong postseason award prediction
A month ago, the Chicago Cubs were in the midst of their second ten-game winning streak of the year and sitting pretty in first place of the National League Central Division. Since then, though, they have seen their fortunes turn for the worse. Their 2-1 loss to the Athletics on Tuesday night dropped them to 32-29 on the season, and they currently sit in fourth place in the NL Central.
Since winning their tenth consecutive game on May 8, Chicago is just 5-17. They have not won a single series in almost a month, though they did split four games at home with the Pittsburgh Pirates last week.
Despite these struggles, it appears many MLB analysts still consider them to be one of the best teams in Major League Baseball.
Chicago Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong predicted to win Gold Glove as team is ranked 7th
On Tuesday, The Athletic released their weekly Major League Baseball power rankings. Despite the fact that the Cubs have not played good baseball in over a month, they had Chicago ranked seventh. What is more, they also predicted that Pete Crow-Armstrong will win his second consecutive Gold Glove:
“By season’s end, PCA is unlikely to live down the “Little League homer” he allowed against the Milwaukee Brewers and David Hamilton, a player with a 76 wRC+.
“However, let’s try and shift the narrative.
“PCA leads all outfielders in Outs Above Average with 12. The next closest, Boston’s Ceddanne Rafaela, has 9. Those 12 OAA are second to just Bobby Witt Jr.’s 15 for the MLB-wide lead. Among all position players, PCA is tied with Cody Bellinger for the Defensive Runs Saved lead with 13.
“Crow-Armstrong’s 2.4 fWAR is good enough for 13th in baseball, almost all of it attributed to his defense, though the bat is picking up.
“When the 24-year-old called his defensive miscues ‘genuinely laughable,’ he was correct.”
Crow-Armstrong’s defense certainly has been his saving grace this season. Aside from his baffling errors against the Milwaukee Brewers a couple of weeks ago, he has been the best centerfielder in baseball, as described above.
Offensively, though, he has been wildly inconsistent. To date, he is hitting .237/.325/.388 with seven home runs, 26 RBI, and 12 stolen bases.
On a positive note, though, PCA is hitting .273/.389/.477 in his last 12 games played, and .346/.433/.577 in his last six. If he can really turn a corner offensively, he could help spark the lineup. This, of course, would go a long way towards winning more games.
