Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell (0)

The Indiana Fever dropped to a 4-4 record after losing to the Portland Fire, 100-84. Aliyah Boston led the way for the visiting team with 18 points and seven rebounds. Kelsey Mitchell had 17 points, four assists and two steals.

The Fever dropped to the ninth seed after their loss to the 2026 WNBA expansion team.

Despite the loss, there was cause for celebration as Mitchell posted a career achievement. The nine-year veteran climbed the franchise assists ranking. After her four dimes against the Fire, she now has 819 total career assists, surpassing Erica Wheeler’s 815.

Mitchell now has the third-most assists in Fever history.

Chicago Sky rival and Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) talks to Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell (0) during the first half during game two of the first round of the 2024 WNBA Playoffs at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Kelsey Mitchell climbs Indiana Fever’s assists ladder

The 5-foot-8 guard was the second overall pick of the Fever in the 2018 WNBA Draft. In nine years, she has averaged 17.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.

Last offseason, Mitchell signed a one-year, $1.4 million supermax contract with the Fever. This was coming off a career-best season in points, averaging 20.2 points per game. She was also named to the WNBA All-Star game for the third consecutive year.

Mitchell was also among the top five in the WNBA MVP voting and was named to the All-WNBA First Team.

The Fever announced Mitchell’s historic feat following Saturday’s disappointing loss.

“congrats to Kelsey Mitchell on moving into 3rd all-time in franchise history in assists,” the team posted.

In eight games this season, the former Ohio State Buckeyes star is averaging 20.6 points. She is currently leading the Fever in points. Mitchell has been the steady hand for Indiana at the guard position, along with Caitlin Clark.

Unfortunately for the Fever, they still haven’t found their footing this season. Indiana has lost its last two games, with its defeat to Portland marking its biggest of the season. The other three losses were by a close margin.

It is clear that the Fever still has a lot to work on. However, the season is still young, and based on what they’ve shown so far, it is clear they can produce at a higher level once they get their act together.
