Chicago White Sox: Munetaka Murakami named 2nd-best rookie in Major League Baseball
The Chicago White Sox are 32-28 through the first 60 games of the 2026 MLB season. To say that no one expected them to be this good this year would be an understatement. Currently, they are one of just five American League teams with a winning record, and sport the fourth-best record in the AL. What is more, they have the tenth-best record in all Major League Baseball.
In order to get to this point, the White Sox have relied on the efforts of multiple rookie players, but none as noteworthy as Japanese slugger Munetaka Murakami, who was surprisingly signed by Chicago during the off-season.

When Bleacher Report published their list of the top-25 rookies in Major League Baseball, it was no surprise to see Murakami ranked second:
“After rumors of a potential $200 million payday entering the offseason, Munetaka Murakami ended up settling for a two-year, $34 million deal from the Chicago White Sox when concerns about his ability to handle elite velocity and manage his strikeout rate took center stage.
“With a 32.5 percent strikeout rate, those concerns were not unfounded, but an excellent 17.9 percent walk rate and elite power production have essentially made him the modern day version of Adam Dunn.
“A hamstring strain sidelined him last week, but with 20 home runs through 246 plate appearances, he has been as big a reason as any for the White Sox surprising start to the year.”
Unfortunately, the White Sox face the reality of having to play without Murakami for about a month due to his grade-two hamstring strain. Hopefully they will be able to stay afloat and in contention until he returns.
Through 57 games, Murakami is hitting .240/.378/.560 with 20 home runs and 41 RBI. His 20 home runs still lead the American League.
