Portland Fire veteran breaks down in tears after Indiana Fever game
Megan Gustafson and the Portland Fire have gotten off to a strong start to this season. They hold a 6-4 record, including Saturday’s impressive 100-84 win over Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever.
The veteran center plays a key role on the team, averaging 10.4 points on 64.5% shooting, along with 2.8 rebounds in 17.1 minutes per game. She delivered her best game of the campaign versus Indiana. Gustafson scored 22 points on 8-for-8 shooting and finished with a +15 on the night.
Her impressive performance could lead to increased playing time and more opportunities to score inside the paint. The 29-year-old also has a chance to earn Fire head coach Alex Sarama’s trust as the season progresses.

Megan Gustafson was emotional after win against Indiana Fever
Reporters asked Gustafson to share her thoughts about how she played against the Fever. She became emotional when discussing Portland’s belief in her.
“I mean we’re a bunch of overlooked players, and I think we all have a chip on our shoulder,” Gustafson said. “You know, I’ve really never been respected as a basketball player until I’ve gotten here. So I’m really thankful for this team, this organization, they really believe in me. Why am I crying?
“Yeah, so just belief in each other, and they really try to play to each other’s strengths. The coaches see everybody’s strengths and they see what we can each improve on every single day in practices. So yeah, just grateful.”
I’ve been so intrigued by the Portland Fire.
There’s players like Megan Gustafson who embody who they are. Overlooked, have something to prove, and unique journeys. Seeing her cry about never being respected until she got there hit me hard. pic.twitter.com/C628G8S7jh

The Dallas Wings drafted Gustafson at No. 17 in the second round in 2019. She has since also suited up for the Washington Mystics, Phoenix Mercury, and Las Vegas Aces.
The Iowa product is now in her eighth season and was part of the Aces’ championship-winning team in 2025. While she has had a journeyman career, she may have found a long-term home in Portland.
Gustafson will look to repay the front office’s decision to take a chance on her by continuing to play well and help guide the Fire to the playoffs.
