Sophie Cunningham recalls personal story amid Fever season

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham

Sophie Cunningham has become an important veteran presence for the Indiana Fever, but the sharpshooter recently reflected on the humble beginnings that shaped her journey to the WNBA. As the Fever continue their strong push through the 2026 season, Cunningham shared a heartfelt childhood story that highlighted how perseverance, creativity and family support helped develop the player she is today.

Growing up, Cunningham did not always have access to ideal basketball facilities. She recalled playing on a quality hoop until a tornado destroyed it, forcing her family to improvise with an older goal that featured a worn net and a sandbag holding the base in place. Even after that setup became unusable, she continued practicing on a simple square target attached near her home. Rather than viewing those circumstances as setbacks, Cunningham embraced them as opportunities to improve her shooting accuracy.

Those makeshift practice sessions became a defining part of her development. Without a perfect rim or pristine court, Cunningham learned to focus on precision and repetition, refining the mechanics that would eventually make her one of the WNBA’s reliable perimeter shooters. Every adjustment required a higher level of concentration, and those countless hours of practice laid the foundation for the confidence she now displays on the court.

Cunningham’s memories also reflected the importance of family throughout her basketball journey. Whether helping maintain makeshift hoops or encouraging her to continue practicing despite difficult circumstances, her family’s support allowed her passion for the game to flourish. Looking back, she described those childhood courts not as limitations but as places filled with unforgettable experiences that continue to inspire her years later.

Cunningham shared an interesting story about her childhood. This can be seen in a video shared by the Fever’s official Instagram account.

“We kind of had a nice basketball goal,” Cunningham said. “A tornado took that out and then we were shooting on not the best goal. Ratty old net but it was awesome with a sandbag at the back of the basketball. Then something happened to that one. Then we ended up with shooting at our house, at this little square-type thing, which taught us great accuracy. I’ll say that why I can say I can shoot the ball. But there’s just so many hoops and memories and courts. When I think back on my childhood, it brings back special memories.”

That perspective has carried into her current role with the Fever. Cunningham has provided valuable leadership and experience alongside a talented Indiana roster led by Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell. While her shooting and defensive intensity have strengthened the team’s rotation, her professionalism and resilient mindset have also helped reinforce the culture of a squad determined to compete for a championship.

As Indiana enters the most important stretch of the season, Cunningham’s story serves as a reminder that success often begins far from bright arenas and national attention. The lessons she learned practicing on damaged hoops and improvised courts continue to influence her approach to the game today. Those early experiences not only sharpened her shooting ability but also instilled the determination that has allowed her to enjoy a successful professional career and contribute to one of the WNBA’s top contenders.
