Chicago Cubs: Justin Steele shares injury update ahead of 2026 Spring Training

Chicago Cubs pitcher Justin Steele (35) delivers against the Texas Rangers during the first inning at Wrigley Field.

The Chicago Cubs are hopeful that the 2026 MLB season will be the year they finally overtake the Milwaukee Brewers and reclaim the National League Central Division. As they did last season, the Cubs will be relying heavily on their pitching staff in order to accomplish this goal, as well as their young lineup that will only continue to improve.

One pitcher that the Cubs were forced to spend the majority of last season without was All-Star Justin Steele. He was shelved early in 2025 and needed UCL surgery, which ended his season early. Chicago did not sign a big-name starter for their rotation in hopes that Steele would be back.

And, so far, it appears that he is ahead of schedule.

Many fans viewed it as a big gamble that the team decided not to invest more in the starting pitching market. After all, relying on Steele’s projected recovery time had him just barely being ready for Spring Training.

Last week, during Cubs Convention, Steele revealed that he is, in fact, ahead of schedule:

“I’ve been doing the normal throwing progression [over] the past however so many months, and it’s been feeling really good.

“It felt back to normal, and [I’m] ready to start building the volume off the mound again.”

He did say, though, avoiding overexerting himself is going to be a struggle:

“That’s going to be the tough part, during spring training. The past however so many spring trainings I’ve been like training, preparing and getting ready to go start the season, so it’s going to be an adjustment and watching everybody come in … and I’m going to want to leave with everybody, so that’s going to be an adjustment period, but it’ll be good.”

Before getting hurt, Steele was 3-1 with a 4.76 ERA.
