Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White Sox (5-7) have been terrible to start the season and have one of the worst starting rotations and lineups in Major League Baseball.

The Chicago White Sox starting staff has been terrible

The White Sox’s pitching staff has not been great to start the season, ranking 28th-worst in team ERA (5.45). The starting rotation (27th, 5.05 ERA) and bullpen (25th, 5.71) have also come up short in the early goings.

The pitching for the White Sox has been so poor that they optioned Opening Day starter Shane Smith, who struggled in his first three outings (10.80 ERA). White Sox director of player development, Paul Janish, explained that they hope Smith’s time in Charlotte will be short.

Only two of the White Sox’s “starting pitchers ” have had success. Right-handers Davis Martin has a 2.45 ERA and 11 strikeouts, while Sean Burke has a 3.60 ERA and 15 strikeouts. Right-hander Grant Taylor has opened a few games for the White Sox and has also done well in his short stretch of games — a 1.80 ERA and seven strikeouts in five innings.

The Chicago White Sox offense has been just as bad, with one exception

The White Sox’s offense to open the season has not been better. The White Sox have the third-worst team batting average in Major League Baseball (.207) and are third in strikeouts (127).

The one bright spot in the White Sox lineups this season has been first baseman/designated hitter Murataka Murakami. The 26-year-old slugger is the team leader in home runs, RBI (seven), and OPS (.846).

After losing three straight at home against the Baltimore Orioles, the White Sox travel to Kansas City to play the Royals. The Royals are 5-7 and have lost back-to-back games against the Cleveland Guardians.
