Sophie Cunningham faces personal challenge after Fever decision
Indiana Fever fans were left hanging on Sophie Cunningham after the signing window opened in WNBA free agency on Saturday.
The top priority for the Fever was to re-sign three-time All-Star Kelsey Mitchell. No. 2 on the list was Lexie Hull. Indiana wasted no time, signing both stars to new deals as soon as they were eligible.
The announcement on Cunningham had to wait one day, but the Fever still got it done. The team announced on Sunday that they had successfully signed the 6-foot-1 forward to a one-year contract. After her impressive first season with the Fever in 2025, Cunningham will officially return for at least another year.

Sophie Cunningham challenged to 1-on-1 face-off by her sister
The grind doesn’t stop for Cunningham. She was back on the court on Monday shortly after her decision to sign a lucrative deal with the Fever.
In an Instagram story posted by her sister, Lindsey Cunningham-Hudson, the Fever star is seen putting in some offseason work. Cunningham returned to her alma mater, the University of Missouri, to get some work in.
As it turns out, Cunningham faced a personal challenge from her own sister during the sweat session.
“I’ve just been working out with Sophie, rebounding for her,” Lindsey said. “And I asked if we could finish playing 1-on-1.”
“And she goes, ‘For fun,’” Sophie responded. “She’s gonna kick my [expletive], but for fun. And I was like, ‘Lindsey, when have we ever been able to play just for fun?’
“We’re on good terms right now, we don’t need to be fighting.”
There’s nothing but love between the sisters, but it is clear that the competitive fire is alive and burning.
Sophie Cunnningham is still recovering from a major knee injury. She tore the MCL in her right knee in August, which required season-ending surgery. The 29-year-old, however, is fully expected to be ready for the start of the 2026 season.
The Fever open their campaign on May 9 against Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings.
