Chicago Bears: Mayor Brandon Johnson trying to sabotage stadium deal
The Chicago Bears are waiting on the Illinois Senate to pass a megaprojects bill that would provide the team with property tax relief for a new stadium project in Arlington Heights.
The Bears are deciding between building in Arlington Heights or in Hammond, Indiana. The NFL Stadium Council told the team that those locations are the only two viable sites to build.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has pleaded with the Bears to remain in the city. In a rather bitter move, Johnson plans to use his political leverage to block the megaprojects bill from passing the Senate, per the Chicago Sun-Times.
“I’m building things in this city. I want to build more things in this city. Why is that important? Because it creates opportunities for Chicagoans,” Johnson said.
“Why would I advocate for something that wouldn’t benefit the people of Chicago? I don’t know why any Chicago legislator would vote for anything that doesn’t benefit the people that they represent.”

Johnson claimed he has other potential sites for the Bears in Chicago. However, he declined to relay those ideas.
Frankly, Chicago is a day late and millions of dollars short.
Johnson argued the Bears should not receive tax breaks at a time when social services like schools need better funding in Illinois.
“If we’re asking anyone to tighten the belt, we should look at whose belt is exploding and that’s the ultra-rich,” Johnson said. “As their bellies get fat and our people are starving, this is not the time to balance the budget off the backs of working people.”
It remains to be seen if Johnson has the political power to sway votes in the Senate. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker wants the bill passed, though he’s not wanting to cave into every demand the Bears have.
Common ground will have to be found if the Bears will move to Arlington Heights, or the team will move to Northwest Indiana.
The idea for Chicago to remain the home of the Bears has been dead for a couple of years. Johnson can keep dreaming.
