Chicago White Sox select pitcher with 20.25 ERA after injury; Kyle Teel update
The Chicago White Sox have a couple of injury updates as they begin a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers this weekend, starting with Game 1 on Friday night.
The White Sox enter the series after taking three games from the Minnesota Twins in a four-game series this week. Chicago is 29-27, three games behind the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central and taking a 1.5-game lead over the Toronto Blue Jays for the final Wild-Card spot.
The White Sox have been able to get a hot start without catcher Kyle Teel, who recently suffered a setback while dealing with knee/hamstring issues. Per Bruce Levine, Teel is set to begin running on Saturday.
“Kyle Teel is back with the team rehabbing his knee. He told me he will start running on Saturday,” Levine posted on X.
The White Sox had to place right-handed relief pitcher Jordan Leasure on the injured list for a forearm flexor strain. Chicago selected left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert from Triple A.

Leasure has a 6.27 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 18 games pitched this season. Gilbert has a 20.25 ERA and two strikeouts from his two outings this season. He gave up a total of six runs in losses to the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays.
Teel is expected to miss another two to five weeks.
White Sox manager Will Venable was thankful the setback wasn’t worse.
“We’re happy that it wasn’t a tear or anything,” Venable said, via MLB.com. “Hopefully, it’s just a matter of weeks and not months that he’s back healthy and running around and playing.”
“I talked to him today. He’s optimistic and in good spirits. But yeah, it’s just disappointing.”
The White Sox have struggled at the catcher position with Teel out. Edgar Quero is batting .176 with one home run, and Drew Romo is batting .182 with two home runs.
The offense has been exciting for the White Sox early in the season. For Chicago to continue a postseason push, the team needs Teel’s bat to return sooner rather than later.
