Crosstown Classic hype: White Sox – Cubs May clash insights
On May 15, the city of Chicago will live another day to remember: the MLB Crosstown Classic will put the White Sox and the Cubs in the same dome, to play a memorable baseball game. The excitement will last three days, from the 15th to the 17th of May, in Guaranteed Rate Field. The fiery Series between North Side and South Side sees the Cubs in front, leading 77-75 after a total dominance in 2025, when they closed the season with a 5-1 score against the Sox. Now everything is almost ready for a revival of the flame and the fight for Chicago is on.
Every spring, in the Windy City, the Crosstown Classic turns a regular MLB series into a full-blown civil war that engulfs the entire city, pitting the North Side against the South Side. 2026, obviously, is no exception. Games like this defy all logic and prediction, and betting on the outcome is far from simple. For those who still want to bet on the game, no matter what, sportsbook deposit match bonuses are just the thing, because they provide a convenient starting budget to use on events with uncertain outcomes, like this one.
A historic rivalry
Recently, the Cubs swept the floor with the Sox, winning 12 of the last 14 Crosstown Classics. This is a terrible statistic for the proud Sox, who can’t stand to lose to their rivals anymore. The rivalry between the two baseball teams in Chicago is a peculiar one. The Cubs and White Sox don’t play in the same league, so these games are usually meaningless in terms of the season. The Series, however, is a true civil war among neighbours. Mayor Daley, arguably the most popular first citizen in the history of the city, used to close City Hall to go watch the game and some of the most passionate sports fans in the country would eagerly run at the throat of their neighbour simply because he is wearing the cap of the other franchise. It’s almost madness and this is exactly what makes these matches so compelling to watch.
The Crosstown Classic is all about family and tradition.
It’s about bragging rights, obviously, and is about memory. In 1906, when the first Classic was played, there was snow in Chicago, and from that day onward the Classic became part of the city’s history. Nowadays, the Cubs are a tier above and are looking to bigger games, but for several years the Cubs and White Sox were at the same level and the game was fair and balanced. Right now, the Cubs are not looking to actively develop players. With the roster they have, they want to win, as Craig Counsell recently underlined. The White Sox are not at that level, at least for the moment.
Cultural impact on Chicago
If you ask a citizen of Chicago about the Classic, he or she will tell you something close to these lines.
“This rivalry is more than just baseball within a city’s limits. It’s about Hyde Park versus Rogers Park; the South Side Irish, Morgan Park, Mt. Greenwood and Beverly. It’s about Old Comiskey and Wrigley, it’s about the Union Stockyards and Union Station. It’s about Al Capone, Bugs Moran, Earl Weiss, the Polish, the Irish, the Italian, the Hispanics and the African-Americans. Each of them contributed to the city’s rivalry.”
In a city where the winds always blow fiercely, they do so in an even stronger way when the Classic is scheduled.
Going back to the game itself, the Cubs are the strong favourites to win. This is an unpredictable rivalry and the Sox had their moments but we can’t undervalue the talent their opponents have at their disposal. The Cubs dominated in recent years and are expected to keep on doing just that in 2026. So far, the Cubs already won several games and are in second position in their division. The Sox, on the other hand, are not in a good shape and their losses are considerably more than their wins. Shane Smith will probably handle the first pitcher’s duties for the White Sox, while the Cubs will ride with their depth: Matthew Boyd; Cade Horton and Edward Cabrera make for a strong pitchers’ rotation.
