White Sox’s trade deadline plan after surprise move is blatantly obvious
The Chicago White Sox made a surprise trade earlier this week, acquiring pitcher Trevor Richards in a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Richards was added to the White Sox’s 26-man roster on Thursday, so we’ll get to see him promptly. But the question is, what exactly is the plan for the right-hander?
While Chicago is making a push in the AL Central, acquiring Richards and then placing him on the active roster seems odd. He made just five appearances in all of 2025, bouncing between a couple of different teams. He then joined the Phillies back in December and made a pair of appearances out of their bullpen, giving up run one over 4.1 innings of work.
Richards owns a lifetime 4.55 ERA and was converted from a starter to a reliever years back, so it’s not like he is that juicy of an addition.
However, it seems pretty clear what the White Sox are trying to achieve here.

I don’t actually believe that Chicago landed Richards with the hope that he would be a significant contributor for a playoff run. I think the White Sox did so with the intention of flipping him at the MLB trade deadline.
Richards is 32 years old and does not really factor into Chicago’s future, and for as pleasantly surprising as the Sox have been this season, I think they are more focused on the long term rather than the 2026 campaign.
If the White Sox can get some decent innings out of Richards, they can trade him to a reliever-needy team between now and Aug. 3. Contending ballclubs are always searching for bullpen help at the deadline, and sometimes, they are willing to pay more than you would think to acquire it.
Richards does have solid stuff, as evidenced by the fact that he has averaged 9.8 strikeouts per nine innings over the course of his big-league career. That has value, so a squad wanting a relief arm that can miss some bats may have interest in the veteran.
If Chicago can turn around and flip Richards for a decent prospect, it would be a nice win for the Southsiders.
