Indiana Fever not expected to defend title in 2026
The Indiana Fever are the 2025 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup champions. However, most WNBA general managers do not expect them to reach the Finals this year, let alone defend their title in the in-season tournament.
According to the 2026 WNBA general manager survey released on Tuesday, league executives expect a change among the top teams competing for the Commissioner’s Cup this year. The league released its annual survey ahead of Friday’s season opener.
Each year, all WNBA general managers answer a wide range of questions about the league’s best teams and players. However, they are not allowed to vote for their own players or organizations. Their answers provide insight into how top executives expect the new season to play out.

Indiana Fever not favored in GM survey
When asked which two teams would reach this year’s Commissioner’s Cup final, most GMs picked the Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty. That matchup received 43% of the votes, followed by a showdown between the Aces and the Atlanta Dream at 29%.
The Fever did not rank among the top expected Commissioner’s Cup finalists. They only appeared in an “also receiving votes” category for a possible matchup with Las Vegas. This shows only a small number of executives still view them as contenders.
Last year, 17% of GMs picked a Minnesota Lynx-Indiana final and 8% chose a Las Vegas-Indiana matchup. Despite those low vote percentages, the Fever still won their first Commissioner’s Cup in 2025. They defeated Minnesota 74–59 on July 1.
For 2026, the GMs also named the defending champion Las Vegas Aces as favorites for the league title. The Aces received 40% of the votes to finish the season as the overall WNBA champions. Not a single GM believes the Fever has what it takes to win it all in 2026.
Indiana heads into the upcoming season still underestimated by many league decision-makers. The team hopes to overturn that narrative again this year.
The Fever will begin their regular season on Saturday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse against the Dallas Wings.
