Chicago Cubs grade through 60 games points to possible trade deadline fire sale
The Chicago Cubs are not playing good baseball. At 32-29, they have the same record as the cross-town White Sox, who are seemingly emerging from a long rebuild. Meanwhile, the Cubs are supposed to be the cream of the crop in the National League. Many predicted them to not only win the NL Central, but to make it all the way to the World Series.
For a brief moment or two, it certainly looked like they would. Early in the year, Chicago put together two different 10-game winning streaks. But since then, they are 5-17 and floundering.
If things do not turn around in June, they could become sellers at the trade deadline.
The Chicago Cubs have time to turn it around, but can they?

Bleacher Report recently released their grades for each MLB team through the first 60 games of the season. If this had been written about the first 40 games of the year, Chicago would have gotten one of the highest grades in the league. Now, though, they have been given a C-, and a warning that tough trade deadline decisions could be coming:
“Can they turn things back around?
“With this injury-riddled pitching staff, and both Dansby Swanson and Alex Bregman hitting worse than ever before in their careers?
“There’s certainly no time like the present to do so.
“Tuesday’s series opener against the A’s was Chicago’s first of 22 consecutive games against opponents who are presently below .500—six each against the Rockies and the Giants, four against the Mets and three each against the A’s and Blue Jays.
“If the Cubs are still sputtering after that scheduling gift, it’ll be time to start talking about the trade deadline and the 14 impending free agents on this roster.”
Unfortunately, the Cubs dropped that first game against the Athletics by the score of 2-1. Their pitching staff, despite injuries, has been rather solid all season long. What is more, Edward Cabrera and Matthew Boyd will be back this week.
But the offense has been deplorable for almost a month. Sure, they explode for big games here and there, but more often then not find themselves struggling to plate enough runs to support even the best pitching performances.
Manager Craig Counsell has drawn a lot of criticism for how he has managed the lineup and bullpen, and rightfully so. It is one thing to have faith in your players; it is an entirely different thing to keep putting them in situations where they have proven they will not succeed.
