White Sox linked to intriguing trade for new pitching solution

The Chicago White Sox could definitely afford to add some depth to their starting rotation, as things get pretty spooky after you get past Davis Martin and Sean Burke.

The good news for the White Sox is that there is plenty of time between now and the MLB trade deadline for them to pursue interesting options for their staff, although we do have to see if they will decide to be buyers.

In the event that general manager Chris Getz decides to get aggressive, Chicago should have a broad range of starters to choose from, most of which would comprise significant upgrades over what the White Sox already have.

While Freddy Peralta, Sandy Alcantara and Robbie Ray are expected to be among the biggest names available, there is another very compelling arm who could surface on the trade block between now and Aug. 3: Boston Red Sox right-hander Sonny Gray.

In fact, Michael DeRosa of Southside Showdown feels that Gray would comprise a perfect solution for the White Sox.

Gray is currently enjoying an impressive season with the Red Sox, and while he is slated to hit free agency at season’s end, it might be worth trading for him regardless.

“As for Gray, the White Sox would be bringing in a veteran All-Star pitcher who would help boost their rotation. The 36-year-old has been excellent for the Red Sox this season, with a 6-1 record, a 3.06 ERA, and 41 strikeouts in ten appearances. With numbers like these, he would be a nice addition for the front half of the White Sox’s rotation,” DeRosa wrote.

The primary red flag concerning Gray is that his strikeouts are down significantly, as he is averaging just 7.4 punchouts per nine innings. That’s his worst mark since 2016, and his 2.93 K/BB ratio leaves something to be desired considering he led the American League with a 5.29 K/BB last year.

That being said, Gray has done a tremendous job of limiting damage, and his 1.200 WHIP is right in line with his lifetime average.

Chicago probably wouldn’t have to pay an exorbitant price to acquire Gray given his age (36) and impending free agency, but at the same time, there will surely be plenty of other teams involved in the bidding, which will drive up the price.

We’ll see if the White Sox ultimately make a play for Gray in the coming weeks.
